7 1/2 Steps to a Googlicious Website
define: SEO
Now that we have that over with. Let’s move forward. SEO is frustrating. It’s always changing. It changes faster than my girlfriend changes shoes. In fact Google got more algorithim in its closets than my girlfriend has shoes in hers. So it generally scares the average user away. Why bother with it. I try to keep it simple stupid. I don’t want to burden you with shit that is going to go in one ear and out the other. I want to help the 14 year old with a brand new website be able to optimize her site for Googlicious power. Here are my tips:
1)Select a groovy domain name
Google likes domain names a lot better than subdomains. For example Google would prefer ConcreteBlog.com much more than concreteblog.blogspot.com . Part of it is they assume you value your content more if you go out and spend the money on a domain name. And they are right.
2) Select a good content management system
Now that you have a domain selected. You have to have a way to put some content up. Most Googlicious websites use Wordpress,TextPattern, or a simple cms that automatically helps optimize their website based on how it publishes. More info on selecting a CMS can be found here.
3) Content is King
Once you have a domain name, and a CMS you then have to begin loading content. Google likes content that is original. And keep it coming. The more relevant content the better. So if you have a website about Concrete, most of the content in the website needs to be about Concrete. Don’t talk about politics, drugs, booze, and women. Talk about concrete. Google will like you better, and so will your readers. Besides what’s the point of good seo if when people wander in they find a whole bunch of crapola. Although I kinda like it when people talk about booze, women, and umm anyway.
Moving on.
4) Give them some more
The more pages the better. If you have an article on the front page. Put it on a second page utilizing the “more” feature on the common cms’ it creates double the area your content is spread and allows for double the xposure on Google. Kind of. It also allows your readers to see more of your site.
5) Titles are Titular
Titles are very very very important. Selecting strong titles really makes Google love you. Especially when people link to your site using your titles. So remember if you want to be a King of the Blogosphere step up to the plate and select a good title.
6) Internal Linking is Important
If you have multiple articles about Concrete Statues link to each other in your posts. Not only does it allow your readers to explore more, it makes Google happy. Besides if someone new comes to your site looking for information on Concrete Statues they might come back if they see you are commonly writing about concrete statues.
7) Go get some link lovin
Seriously, if you want Google to love you. Other people have to love you first. Go out and get some link lovin. I am not good at this. I don’t beg. I don’t ask. I don’t mention it. I think its like asking girls for numbers. I just don’t do it. If a girl wants my number. She will send a strong enough of a hint that I just get her number. In the blogosphere its the same way for me. I don’t ask. I won’t do it. But if you want to. Darren over at ProBlogger has a good article on How to Ask for Link Lovin.
7 1/2) I am not a genius.
First off realize this. I am not an expert on this subject. I don’t know everything. I learn a lot from a lot of different sources. A few of my favorites are:
John Battelle
SEO Speedwagon
Nick Wilson
Todd Malicoat
You can also do a Technorati Search for SEO
Some other folks are talking about it over at Successful-Blog.com.
and LifeHacker

Thanks Cowboy for the mention. We’re going to we talking about those very same things tomorrow and the next day. I have a great post coming up called “the Secret Live of Search Engines.” Oh. You might not be old enough to watch it. Sorry.
