Challenge Hollywood for Fresh Material

Why can’t everything just be left alone. Do you realize that in our lifetime we will probably see a remake of everything we have ever held dear. Shawshank Redemption. Hunter. Cuckoos Nest. Back to the Future. Rockford Files. Three’s Company. Facts of Life. Matlock. Murder She Wrote. Boy Meets World. You know, at this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kung-Fu the Legend Continues…continue!

You can add just about any movie or television show to the list above – even if it’s already been remade.

Enough people, enough! I realize it’s an easy pay day for everyone involved – but where is the originality? Does Hollywood have any pride left? Or are they busy planning an awards show to honor nothing but remakes?!

The most recent planned remake to get under my skin is Red Dawn; and it’s not because I think it was a great movie. In fact, it was mediocre at best. What galls me is that the flicks’ main selling point is that it stars Tom Cruise’s son Connor.

For producers, remakes are easy money. Take a proven concept that has already been successful, re-release it at a time when parents can take their children to see the updated version, and laugh all the way to the bank. The thinking behind including the children of established stars is that we will be more accepting of watching the same thing again (though likely worse than the original) with the logic that an actor is ‘passing the torch.’ I dunno about your job, but at mine, it’s called nepotism.

Connor might dominate the box office for the next 50 years. Who knows. The point here is that moviegoers should challenge the writers, directors, actors and other creators of cinema for new, thought-provoking works. Anything less, it nothing more that recycling.
